Originally, mom-in-law wanted to take us to some Chinese restaurant on Broadway to try the Taro Duck...but since we've already pre-ordered it at TG for her birthday...there's no point that we have it two days in a row. So, we decided to give this place a shot. Actually, it was Kenji-san (TG's former "J" chef) who first called me and told me that he'll be at this restaurant. We're guessing that he either has partial ownership or he acts as a consultant since we noticed many of "TG items" on its menu. Kenji-san was on vacation when we visited...darn...too bad!
The interior decor was quite nice...simple and comforting. The service...well...not so assertive and prompt...empty dishes were left on our table for about ten minutes...while all the girls (I think there were six or seven of them) were standing around the cash register chit-chatting...I had to wave them down to collect the dishes. The menu? Very limited...it's a level above AYCE, but nothing "wow'ed" us...I mean we're not looking for expensive stuff...but the menu was so "average" that we did not quite enjoy it. Don't get us wrong, the food was decent...just nothing special. The bill was close to $100 (tax included)...but the three of us weren't full!!! Would we visit again? Maybe...when Kenji-san returns...hopefully it will be somewhat different.
This was a special for the day...Octopus Salad...quite refreshing but over-salted.
Chicken Karrage...good but nothing special.
Tuna Tartar...not too great but ok...
The Assorted Tempura did not look too appetizing...tasted fine...again...nothing special.
Does this look familiar to you? LOL! Yes...it's like TG's Mango Roll...they called it Mango California Roll...basically the only difference was no prawn tempura wrapped in the roll.
Grilled Egg Plant...tasted ok...but Toshi's still tasted better!
Tonkatsu...a bit tough to chew...but flavor was good.
Tuna Toro...just ok...
Papaya California Roll...really nothing special...just a piece of papaya inside instead of the usual avocado...

Buddha Boy and I were still hungry (MIL was full already) but we really don't know what to eat so we just ordered a simple Bento Box: chicken karrage (more for Buddha Boy), assorted tempura, California roll, "veggie" sunomono, salad, and miso soup.

After dinner, we had to drop by Yaohan to pick up some grocery to prep for our Chez Buddha dinner on Saturday night. Since we weren't satisfied with Watami, Buddha Boy decided to pick up a bowl of Wonton Soup to bring home.
Wah Yuen is one of the only stalls we visit at Yaohan...(I got sick at most of the other ones before...so I try to avoid them)...the couple other ones are the BBQ stall and Hainanese Chicken stall. The food at Wah Yuen has always been consistent...not great but decent...and the prices are very reasonable.

What's taro duck? Sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteThe previous restaurant in that space was Tokyo Ichiban. It was our go to AYCE sushi place. That was a few years back when AYCE sushi were not that prevalent and they were still edible. Sad to see it gone. They have been there for a while.
ReplyDeleteElaine: It's 荔茸香酥鴨...I will post soon...I am so behind in the postings...will have more time after my exam tomorrow...hehehe
ReplyDeleteLechon: I remember I visited Tokyo Ichiban years ago, it was pretty decent for the price...I was quite surprised it died...but TI was there for the longest time...
ReplyDeleteGoodluck on your exam tomorrow, Buddhagirl.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Lechon!!! **hugz**
