Since mom-in-law played MJ till about 11pm...it made sense for us to meet her down in Richmond...so Buddha Boy chose No.9 in Lansdowne. You see, we're probably one of the most shameless "Buddhist followers"...why? Well, often, on our designated veggie days, we would cook dinner at about 10:30pm, so when the clock strikes 11pm, all the "meat" would be ready to eat! LOL! Or we would drive down to Richmond at 10:30pm, so by the time we sat down and ordered, it's good to eat meat! LOL! So...yes...you guessed it...this was one of those days...LOL! Sorry...we were too hungry so I forgot to take a pic of our first dish...Szechuan-Style Green Beans (干扁四季豆).
Not really sure what I wanted so I just ordered a Pork & Shrimp Wonton Soup (淨雲吞)...simple and easy...other than it's full of MSG...it was nothing special.
Buddha Boy ordered Singaporean Fried Vermicelli (星洲炒米)...good portion but nothing special.
Buddha Boy also ordered Honey Garlic Spare-Ribs (蒜蓉蜜子骨)...it did not look too appetizing...however, to our surprise...it was quite good!
And of course, Buddha Boy ordered Deep-Fried Dumplings (炸水餃)...his favorite from No.9...he loves anything deep-fried or with bacon. I'm not a big fan of this so I did not try any. Buddha Boy thought it was ok...not as good as before.

I really don't like No. 9 all that much but their green bean dish is so freaking good!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Buddha Girl: Not being a Buddhist, I am not familiar with that veggie day practices. How does that work? Do you refrain from meat only some days of the week and for those days the fast ends at 11PM? I am just curious. Ben
ReplyDeleteI like the barbq duck in No.9. Its really plump and good.
ReplyDeleteElain: Yes!!! Buddha Boy and I were amazed how good those green beans were! So yummy!
ReplyDeleteLechon: I find it a bit fatty...but fat is good! LOL!
Ben: It's hard to put it in words...basically a Buddhist day runs on lunar hours...which has only 12 hours in a day and each hour is 120 minutes. When it coverts to western calendar hours, it worked out to be 11pm-11pm.
ReplyDeleteOn our "veggie" only days, we can only have vegetables/fruits (no meat nor seafood). Also, we are not allowed to have garlic, onions, green onions, chives, and cilantro/parsley because these herbs are considered "meat items" (long story will tell you when I meet you one day).
Since we only have one veggie day approximately every two weeks (1st and 15th of every lunar month), we are not allowed to have any dairy or eggs. However, for those hardcore Buddhists who are all-time vegetarians (or for anyone who does a ritual for more than two consecutive days), dairy and eggs are allowed (since it does not require to kill to consume).
And of course, I tend to have more restrictions from my mom, such as no beef, no clams, no tiger lily (daylily), no koi, and no lam (well...I try)...LOL! But Buddha Boy can eat anything he wants!!! So not fair!
Hi Buddha Girl: That is very interesting. You should write a full post about this and tag it onto a visit to a vegetarian restaurant. I am sure a lot of people would enjoy reading about it. All these are new to me and I find that interesting myself. So, I guess vegetarian restaurants are busier during the 1st and 15th of the month? Thanks for sharing. Ben
ReplyDeleteBen: Yes...usually at veggie restaurant, 1st and 15th are quite busy. Some restaurants may close of specific day of the week, however, if 1st or 15th lands on that day, the restaurants will stay open and take the next day in-lieu.
ReplyDeletePlaces like Spicy Vegetarian Cuisine, their big tables are automatically reserved on 1st and 15th for temples. So we will purposely have our veggie days early (by two or three days) just so we can dine at such restaurants.

ReplyDeleteHey Crispy, how would you compare #9's bbq duck with those at Red Star ?
Hi LR, Red Star's bbq duck is lean with crispy skin. The one in no.9 is more fatty. Taste wise I think I prefer no. 9. I guess because its fatty and its juicy. Hey fat rules, right?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, CL !
ReplyDeleteHi Buddha Girl,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your explananation on your buddhist vegetarian food rituals. I was also curious as to how you practise it. We are not hard core Buddhists but my mom mentioned to me how she goes to the temple on the 15th and they serve vegetarian food there also.
Which are some veggie restaurants you would recommend? I don't know many except Lulu Veggies at Crystal food court and Whole Veggies on Main and Bodhi Choi Heung. Oh I heard Gorilla Foods on Richards St was good but I haven't tried it yet.
I second Ben's idea that it would be cool if you did a post on your Buddhist days with a vegetarian restuarant!:=)
I agree #9 has nice juicy bbq duck, on of my faves there!
Hello Agingteen! Thanks for dropping by!!!
ReplyDeleteSome good veggie restaurants I enjoy are Spicy Vegetarian (always busy), Golden Fortune, Bodhi (for cold plates), Veggie Bunch (buffet), and Lulu (my favorite).
We're not hardcore Buddhist neither...but since we're meatatarians, we always wanna make sure our veggie days are worth a while with our veggies...LOL!
