Since we're on our own for dinner, we thought we would just hit the food court and do some hot pot shopping for the weekend. One good thing about food courts is that we could go for all kinds of food at once...but of course...generally speaking, quality rarely exists at these places.
While I was on the phone, Buddha Boy went in and quickly ordered his usual, Shrimp Wontons in Soup (淨鮮蝦雲吞)...simple and easy...quite nice actually.ADDRESS : XO Vietnamese Style Food, Richmond, BC (Yaohan Centre)

While I was scouting out for some soupy stuff, I walked by the Vietnamese food stall and glanced at their menu. The owner quickly greeted me and suggested few items...so I settled with three.
He was raving about how good their Vietnamese Spring Roll (越式春卷) was...hahaha...of course...these stalls would say anything to get our business. Buddha Boy only ordered one roll to try...thank goodness that we did...this tasted horrible...not to mention the bad oil...LOL!
I went with Shredded Chicken Pho (越南雞絲湯粉)...despite the bad spring roll, this was quite nice! Lots of chicken...the broth was quite nice...but really...nothing special.
The owner also raved about their Wind-Sand Chicken Wings (風沙雞翼)...so I ordered one wing to try. Buddha Boy said it looked better than the spring roll. As for the taste...it's quite juicy if it's considered to be just a "deep-fried chicken wing"...but as the so-called wind-sand, it's nothing like it.

The Thai food stall caught our eyes the moment we walked in. The menu looked very interesting and the prices were quite reasonable.
The stall's run by a Thai family. When we visited, the young guy (with his younger sister by his side) tended the front while the parents were cleaning in the kitchen.
Not exactly sure what were the "names" of the items that we ordered, but to us, we had some kind of sweet & sour fish, some kind of creamy coconut curry with eggplant & chicken, and some kind of pork stir-fry. All three tasted quite nice, especially the eggplant & chicken.
Buddha Boy ordered a Minced Salty Beef & Egg Sandwich (鹹牛肉蛋三文治)...basically it's corned beef & egg sandwich...Buddha Boy thought it was not bad, but could be better.
I was really only ordering a sandwich for Buddha Boy, but then I saw a picture of the French Toast (西多士) at the counter...it looked good...so I just had to order it! This had some orange marmalade filling inside. I thought this was quite yummy, but Buddha Boy didn't like the filling.

Few weeks ago I posted a note to whomever interested in ordering the smoked ducks or Taiwanese sausages from our secret supplier. So after I picked up the orders this morning, I made some delivers in the afternoon. I had the honor to meet many of our wonderful supporters of our blog.

GH showered us some pastries from her favorite bakery, The Sweet Spot.
I really wanted to try one immediately but I was good, I waited until everyone's home. Buddha Boy immediately grabbed the cream puff...and to our surprise...it had the perfect sweetness for us. You see, we've always refrain from western-style bakeries because the desserts tend to be too sweet for us...but not this place. I tried the coconut pastry (sorry don't know the exact name of it)...and again...it wasn't over-sweetened...it was so tasty!!!

Thank you GH!!!
Also, Mr. & Mrs. Crispy Lechon showered us with wonderful pastries...these were soooooo good!!! I got so excited as soon as I saw them. I felt bad after leaving their house because I was so impolite and accepted it right away!!! My appologies to Mr. & Mrs. Crispy Lechon!
Hopia (好餅) is a Filipino pastry originally introduced by Chinese immigrants (particularly Fujianese) in Philippines. It's generally filled with mung bean paste, however, in recent years, many different types of fillings, such as ube, were also popular amongst locals.
Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Crispy Lechon!!!

Thank you so much for the smoked duck. It was so good. We finally had it for dinner last night. I roasted it quite nicely in the oven first. It looked like barbq duck with crispy skin but with tea-smoked duck flavour. Really good. You should try it this way. Roasting also let out some fat into the roasting pan which is a good thing coz less fat to ingest. Again so so thank you very much Buddhagirl and Buddhaboy for this nice smoked duck.
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome Crispy! And thank you in return for the wonderful hopia!!!
ReplyDeleteBuddha Boy's going to order the whole duck like you did and do it your way...hehehehe!!! It's nice to know it worked because we wondered about roasting a cooked duck again (we thought it may dry up the meat).
One thing to watch out when roasting the smoked duck is that dont leave it in the oven for a long time. It will dry out the already cooked meat. You can just put it under broil for a few minutes. I also took it out of the fridge for about an hour before roasting to make it room temp.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I will do for my 2nd duck (which I kept in the freezer) is to cut out the breast meat and the leg, Then just sear it on a hot pan with the skin down. Dont need to sear the meat. Just the skin. I will then have crispy duck skin just like what they serve in Western restaurants.
Also, I kept the duck carcass and bones. It is so flavourful that I'm planning to cook it in a soup with tofu and watercress or some mustard green. Yum!
Thanks again for hooking me up with the duck and sausages. They were AMAZING! Can't wait to make fried rice with the left over sausages I saved in the freezer this week.
ReplyDeleteThe coconut pastry is called macarrons. I normally don't like western bakeries either, but this one place is definitely different.
Keep up the good job with all the yummy pictures and writings.
@Crispy:
ReplyDeleteYes...the bones of smoked duck is so tasty!!! Smart...adding tofu and watercress to make it into soup would be so tasty and fragrant!!! The GM at TG taught us to make congee with the bones...mmm...yummy!!!
@GH:
Coconut macarrons!!! YUMMY!!! Thank you so much once again!!! Thank you so much for your support!!! **hugz** Glad to hear you like the duck and sausages!!! I am trying to convince the supplier to publicize their email or phone so all interests can contact them directly...hehehehe!
Those shrimp wontons look yummy- they're not as huge as the ones from #9 though. And I am a real sucker for any sort of chicken wings so I HAVE to try those Wind-Sand chicken wings! Also, the pastries in your pictures look delicious!
ReplyDeleteHello munchkie!!! Yea, those shrimp wontons were not big. Buddha Boy likes the size at #9 too...he also loves their deep-fried dumplings...hahahaha!!!
ReplyDeleteTry the chicken wings and let us know how your experience is!
And if you are ever in the area of the The Sweet Spot, drop by and try it...it's actually quite nice!!!
