2011-01-15 Dinner @ The One Spot Soup House (湯.com)

5857 Victoria Drive, Vancouver, BC

The One Spot Soup House (湯.com) on Urbanspoon
Since our last visit...we've been craving for some more claypot rice (煲仔飯), so this time, we dragged MukMuk-D along.  For the past few weeks, MukMuk-D has become an important eating buddy because he eats almost anything (just no bittermelon, or anything bitter) and he eats quite a bit...so we recruited him to join our pack...hahahahahaha!!!
After we ordered, they served each of us a bowl of soup and a mini-serving of seaweed.  The "boss" (owner) was in on this day, so the girl (with glasses) who was a bit ignorant last time was all pleasant and courteous...hahaha...quite a difference.
Originally, MukMuk-D was going to order something else, but I think I influenced him when I mentioned that the pork chop pot sounded quite interesting, so in the end, he ordered a Clay Pot Rice With Pork Chop On Top (豬扒煲仔飯).  There were two sauce choices:  black pepper & onion (黑椒洋蔥), or cheese & ketchup (芝士茄汁), he went with latter.
Although the "chops" were quite tender and juicy, however, the overall "pot" had way too much ketchup and very little cheese (almost none)...and the "style" kinda spoiled the fun of having a claypot rice.
I decided to go for the Clay Pot Rice With Pork Belly On Top (紅燒五花腩煲仔飯).  Other than the meat, it also had some kind of mushrooms (can't remember what it's called), and some seasonal veggie.
The meat was quite fatty, but it was quite a generous amount.  The sauce from the braised meat along with the added soy sauce for the rice made a great combo in flavor and taste.  This was yummy!
Buddha Boy was boring.  He had the same thing as last time, the Clay Pot Rice With Minced Pork Cake On Top (肉餅煲仔飯).  The only difference was last time he ordered it with the salted fish (鹹魚), and this time, he went with the preserved veggie mui-choy (梅菜).
Buddha Boy was so happy with the "wok-ba" or "guo-ba" (鍋巴)...one of his favorites!  He thought it was made just right.  I could tell that he really enjoyed it because he ate my portion too!!!  LOL!  It's ok, I'm not a big fan of it anyways, I like my rice soft and fluffy.

  1. Ha ! I was passing by Victoria/41st on Saturday and almost ate there. I was the only person inside, and the owner/server asked what I wanted. I really wanted to stay, but somehow I didn't as I don't like eating at a place where there's been no previous customers (ok, it was only 11:30am). Thing is, she kept hounding me to decide to the point where I got turned off by it, so I made a lame excuse and left. Ended up having an early lunch at Golden Sparkle a few doors down.

  2. "wok-ba" or "guo-ba" (鍋巴) ....... ok at least that's evidence they actually cook the rice in the claypot and that it's not just used as a mere serving vessel.

  3. Hahaha! Yea...the service is questionable when the owner's not present...hahahah!

Yups! That's exactly what Buddha Boy said when he saw the "wok-ba" or "guo-ba" on our first visit...they did cook the rice in the pot!!! LOL!!!

  7. BG means 'kow jie' as in pick up guys.

BG doesn't want me to try the Flatline burger challenge at Hogshack. I'm not in my 20's anymore, and we know it's not the healthiest food option. Anyone out there want to persuade BG for me? :p

Sounds good, we will check with Derek when he's good and we arrange a time to go for the challenge! Buddha Boy suggested to have the green salad instead of the fries...I think Derek is going to do that too!
