So, after Sylvia & Anton's, I dragged Buddha Boy to Richmond and visited the Taiwanese breakfast stall in President Plaza (統一廣場). No, I was not hungry, but since we don't usually wake up this early, I jumped at the chance...hehehehe!
Before our blogging days, I have visited YH numerous times, and each time has always been satisfying...of course, comparing to the breakfast places in Taiwan, this place still got a long way to go, but for 604, good enough. However, this visit was extremely disappointing, to the point that I will not visit again.
Soy Drink (豆漿)...tasted horrible. This was bland and tasted like water. What happened? I recall they had pretty smooth and rich soy drink before...this was worse than pre-packaged jugs. I over-heard the table next to us commenting on how bland their drinks were...they ended up throwing away their drinks.
Pork Shaobing (豬肉燒餅)...looked very unappetizing...not much meat and the pastry was not flaky. This tasted horrible.
Finally, the Shaobing with Chinese Donut (燒餅油條). While the shaobing was good (flaky and fresh), the donut was doughy and soggy...yup...totally different from my previous experiences. Moreover, it was only 8am in the morning (just opened), but the donut had an "old oil" (bad oil) taste...ewww...gross.

I went a Shen Zhen chain one b4. While it might not compare to the authentic ones in TW, I had some pretty good 牛肉捲, better than all of the ones I have had here LMAO
ReplyDelete^Elaine, is there a Shen Zhen here?
ReplyDeleteI hope it was just an off day @ Yung Ho. They have the best shaobing in 604. I wish they served salty soy milk!
@Elaine:
ReplyDeleteYea...I heard 永和豆漿 is doing well in China...in Taiwan, I usually like 四海 better than 永和.
@Gloria:
They do serve salty soy milk (鹹豆漿)...never tried it though...but if it's bland and watery like the sweet one I had...then it's not going to work because it will not curdle when vinegar is added...
@Gloria,
ReplyDeleteI only tried Yung Ho once before, and it was way better before. I have to agree with BG on this one, it was pretty bad, Vitasoy would even be better in this case.
@Gloria
ReplyDeleteI meant the city Shen Zhen in China!
@BG & BB, I went to YH three times within 3 months after reading Ben (Chowtimes) review in early 2010:

I only wrote about the first visit in his thread above. Anyway, all three times were disappointing to say the least. I haven't been back since my 3rd time there.
@LotusRapper:
ReplyDeleteI wonder what happened...I think the last time we visited was sometime in late 2009 (but Buddha Boy thinks it's some time in 2010)...nonetheless, it's still a long time ago...and it was not this bad...just like you, we will not return.
You're gonna get much better shaobing, yuotiao, sweet or savoury soy milk at Northern Meixi (Crystal Mall), Aberdeen FC or any of the Shanghai/Taiwanese restos than at Yung Ho.
