Gold Stone on Urbanspoon
I picked up Buddha Boy from work in Downtown so we could do some grocery shopping at Costco.  We were hungry, but we didn't know what we wanted...so we ended up at Gold Stone...hahaha!  Someone told me that Gold Stone was previously in Richmond (by HKYK Hot Pot, or in the same plaza) before they moved to their current location in Chinatown...wow...that was way before my time...hahahaha!  I only know about GS being in Chinatown since the 80s because they were there for Expo 86...LOL!
Buddha Boy ordered a dinner combo ($16.00) that came with Dinner Roll with Butter (牛油餐飽), Soup of the Day (是日餐湯), Club Steak (公司什扒), Spaghetti (意粉), Dessert of the Day (是日甜品), and a Coffee or Tea (咖啡或茶).  The dinner bun was microwaved warm and it's got a light sweet taste to it.  The soup was Russian Borscht (羅宋湯), nothing special.  The club steak "combo" (regular price $15.00 if ordered a-la-carte) had chicken, beef, ham, bacon, sausage, and a sunny-side egg, all on a bed of seasonal vegetables and fries.  The meats were overall acceptable...nothing great, but it did satisfied a meatatarian like Buddha Boy.
I ordered a Baked Pork Chop with Rice (焗豬扒飯) from their "Special" menu.  The "Special" menu changes periodically and it's available all day long.  The pork chop was deep-fried then baked with cheese and a ketchup-based sauce.  The meat itself was flavorless and dry, but tasted better with the sauce.  The fried rice below was pretty tasteless, and it was only warm, not hot.
My $7.00 "Special" combo came with a choice of Coffee or Tea (咖啡或茶), I chose HK-Style Milk Tea (港式奶茶).  Locally, I have always liked Gold Stone's HK-style milk tea...always fragrant and rich...I could actually taste the "tea" in my "milk tea"...hahahahaha!

  1. My dear wife forgot to mention that with my meal came dessert which I chose ice cream. We took a spoonful of the ice cream to mix into her drink to make it more sweeter and creamy.

  2. Now I remember Goldstone Richmond. It used to be in the spot behind the HKYK hotpot which is now the Korean Barbq place. The present HKYK spot was the former location of Canadian Tire.

    So GS has been around longer than I thought!!! Hahaha! I only know GS in Chinatown when my family moved to Canada in the late 80s.

    I was wondering what was in that cup, at first I was thinking it was curdled milk in the HK Coffee or butter (both ew) ==" Good think you clarified haha

  5. And when BG talks about "dear husband" she may be referring to a certain dude named ....... Fraser Park.

    And no, that Mr. Park is not Korean.

    LOL :-D

    Next time, give i-Cafe's set menus a shot and see how you like them compared to GS.

    Hahahaha! You should know me by now...I just from subject to subject...and missing out points...I type while I play mahjong...hahahahaha!

    @LotusRapper:
    You are bad bad boy..."dear husband"...Mr. Park...hahahahahaha! I don't know about Buddha Boy, but personally, I am not big fan of I-Cafe...both their old and new locations did not impress me as a HK cafe...prices are also on the higher side.

  8. @LR,
    I'm actually not a big fan of GS, but it has easy parking and it is convenient. BG has a few items there that she likes that you don't find elsewhere. But GS is hit and miss and it can be pricey for some items.

  9. @BB,
    IMHO, GS is a bit behind the times and yeah, their quality can be a bit hit & miss. Why not walk up to Boss ..... better food, more turnover and similar prices ?

    @BG,
    Yeah i-Cafe is not all things to all people. BUT lemme tell you a secret, they have free parking. Across Heather in the back alley. It's a gated parkade and you have to ask them to remotely open the gate (kinda tricky if you're by yourself, as you have to rush back out into your car and get the car into the parkade as the gate is opening). Yes prices are a bit higher, but I don't mind as the room is bright with panoramic views ...... I guess that translates to higher rent and higher food prices for them.

  10. @LR,
    maybe we will give Boss another try, but the last time we were there, service was pretty poor and the food we ordered were pretty much all misses. But that was about 3 years ago, we will give it another try. BG likes New Town sometimes for a sit down meal, but I don't like that either. wow, usually BG is the picky one.

    One place neither of us has tried is Maxims upstairs, maybe that is a place to try soon.

    I agree, I-Cafe on Broadway is bright and spacious...well, now I know there's free parking...I think we will pay another visit and see...hahahah! I think I am just bias because I used to drink in the same pub as I-Cafe owners about 10+ years ago (not sure if it's the same group now)...and don't really like them...hahahaha!

    @BB:
    I am not picky! I just don't like substandard food! Especially if I already tried it before! I have a sensitive stomach! Grrr...hahahahahaha!
