2012-06-14 Dinner @ Burnaby Palace Restaurant 口得福菜館

Burnaby Palace Restaurant 口得福菜館 on Urbanspoon
Burnaby Palace has been around for quite a while and the last time I visited was when they were located on Canada Way...yup, I'm old.
After looking at the menu, I could tell that the food has been adjusted to satisfy the local community.
Our Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣湯 was a bit of a disappointment, there wasn't much depth and ingredients were very limited.  The soup was neither hot nor sour.
This place has two types of fried wontons: Deep Fried Won Ton (Chips only) 炸雲皮 or Deep Fried Won Ton (Pork 12 pcs) 炸雲吞.  Of course, I ordered the latter.  This meat was nicely seasoned/marinated and the wontons were nicely deep-fried.  Served with a side of sweet and sour sauce, I could eat dozens and dozens of these at a time.  This simple dish is one of those "crap" food (in my own categories) that I just love to eat.
The Szechuan Spicy Egg Plant 漁香茄子 was a huge disappointment.  The eggplant quality was poor, some pieces were quite tough to chew.
The main reason  why we're here was to satisfy my craving for orange beef 陳皮牛肉.  To accommodate Buddha Girl, I ordered the Sliced Chicken with Orange Flavor 陳皮雞片 instead.  While the "陳皮" (century-old) flavor was weak and the sauce was a bit salty, we still quite enjoyed the dish.
The Twice Cooked Pork w/Cabbage 回鍋肉 did not have all the common ingredients, but this version was still much better than what we previously had at TG (see post 2012-05-01 Dinner @ Top Gun J&C Restaurant 尖東新派食館).
Not sure if we'd return anytime soon for dinner, but we do plan to try their dim sum one of these days...

  1. Hey guys, for pretty good twice-cooked pork (one of my fave dishes), try The Place in Marpole near 64 Ave.

    1. You mean 老地方?
I used to eat there very often before my sister moved her shop (on the same block) to Richmond. I only went through their noodles and flour-based items, never ordered the 回鍋肉 before, will give it a try one day, thanks for the recommendation!
