With a deal voucher soon expiring, Buddha Boy and I made our way to Beautiful Island 風信子休閒餐飲 for dinner. Our last visit had 50/50 hits and misses. While we had a better experience this time, we most likely would not return because the portions were simply too small for fat people like us...
The restaurant was pretty dead when we showed up, there were four tables occupied with a total of eight diners, including us.
Buddha Boy had the Braised Pork & Red Onion w/Rice 紅蔥豬排飯, which was, apparently, their signature item. The sauce was sweet and tangy, but we couldn't taste much onion flavors, with the exception of scallions garnished on top. The meat was too overcooked.
We were speechless when Buddha Boy's Taiwanese Style Calamari 酥炸魷魚 showed up....the oil was bad, the batter was bad, the portion was bad...enough said?
Next was the Pork Blood & Intestine Soup 豬血大腸湯. The broth was tasty, with MSG of course. The sour vegetable was not overly sour. Good amount of pork bung with ample amount of blood cubes. This was my favorite dish of the night, however, it's not good enough for us to return.
The pot of Stir Fried Chicken with 3 Spices 三杯雞 was a delicious dish. The chicken was moist and well marinated. The sauce had light combo hints of basil, green onions and ginger...but where's the garlic?
Honestly, I'm not exactly sure if this restaurant will survive. Being owned by the same people as the previous BBT joint, this restaurant simply went through some renovations and re-launched with a new name. The location was so-so. The ambiance was so-so. The service was so-so. The food was so-so.
