Cafe Loyal 來佬快餐室

It's a Sunday...and Buddha Boy was on duty for some OT again.  Before making his way to the office, Buddha Boy wanted to make sure that his wife was properly fed...

We wanted some kind of comfort food.  After tossing ideas back and forth, Buddha Boy took me to Cafe Loyal 來佬快餐室 on Bridgeport Road at No.5 Road in Richmond.  Is this a restaurant?  Yes...and no.  Simply put, it's a food-court stall embedded in its own enclosed facility that offers HK-style cafe food expedited only over the counter instead of table service.

My chubby husband ordered two dishes.  His first order was Pork Chop & Chicken Steak on Rice 紅酒鴛鴦扒飯 (L89).  The pork chop was chewy and overcooked.  The chicken was tender but not moist.  The so-called "red wine sauce" (as stated in Chinese) was savory but didn't expose much wine fragrance.  The combo came with a drink and Buddha Boy requested an unsweetened Iced Lemon Tea 凍檸茶.  Unfortunately, the tea was very weak and quite diluted.

Buddha Boy's second dish was his usual staple of Singapore Style Vermicelli 星洲炒米粉 (L75).  A bite into this brought us back to the time when we visited Sun Tin Day Cafe 新天地餐廳 on Victoria Drive in Vancouver, a place we vowed to never return.  Yes, this was THAT bad.  This bland, flat and tasteless plate of vermicelli stir-fry had good wok-hei 鑊氣 but it needed A LOT of salt to enhance its fundamental flavors, such as its principal seasoning - curry.  Plate was big but portion was not considerable.  Again, Buddha Boy's unsweetened Iced Lemon Tea 凍檸茶 was not too impressive.

I had the Mixed Grill 鐵板大胃王什扒餐 (W64) and requested to change the beef steak to an extra piece of chicken steak.  The cashier stated that the request could not be done because all the items are "set" in the combo.  I tried to reason with him about my religious no-beef diet but he was quite persistent and kept repeating the same words.  Of course, that all changed when I told him it's a "medical allergy".

In the end, my hot plate of mixed grill came with one egg, one ham slice, one hot dog wiener, one pork chop and two chicken steaks.  I wasn't sure if the wiener contains beef, but just to be on the safe side, I gave it to Buddha Boy.

WTF?  Really?  Okay, I just had to share this...

Noticed how the heat has melted the handle of the steak knife?  Yes, some smart kid placed a steak knife right on a hot iron plate.  Moreover, that same smart kid placed the plastic handle of that same steak knife on the rim of that same hot iron plate.  Speechless.

With no table service, insignificant price points, inconsiderable portions and below par food quality...should we even bother wasting our time writing this post...

Sigh, comfort food was, after all, not so comforting...
